On Thursday 13th October 2016, Glebelands School were delighted to host Dr Matt Pritchard from Maths Magic as he gave entertaining, but thought-provoking Mathematics talks to both students and the local community including the Mayor of Waverley, Councillor Storey.

During the afternoon, students were baffled with card tricks and other logic puzzles that offered the opportunity to win £20, which they were never going to achieve! Dr Pritchard also used magic squares to predict different student’s answers and left them pondering over a number of other mathematically based puzzles but also to realise how mathematics forms the basis of many seemingly simple games that they were familiar with.

Dr Pritchard’s key message during his evening talk was that Maths isn’t at all scary and can be fun to explore. He entertained and intrigued an audience of 120 members of the local Cranleigh community with numerous puzzles and even a method for people to remember their shopping list!

The day was a fantastic success and feedback from those who attended was very positive and it is hoped that this can ignite the curiosity and enthusiasm for mathematics as we strive to develop more young people for future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
