Glebelands School were pleased to welcome the Rotary Club of Cranleigh to the school on Monday 19th of December to collect the Christmas Shoeboxes for their 2013 appeal.

Students of all years at Glebelands collected a staggering 165 shoeboxes which they filled with small toys, crayons, colouring pencils, pens and sweets and wrapped in festive christmas paper.

The boxes will be delivered to children of needy families in the town of Hunedoara and the surrounding orphanages and for some it will be their only gift at Christmas.

Catherine McAulay, Head of Achievement for Year 7 at the school said  "Glebelands students have been part of this appeal for many years now and really set themselves a challenge every year to make as many gift boxes as they possibly can because they know the difference they make to children when they reach their destination in Romania. One student called them "little boxes of happiness" which I think was very apt. We also thank parents and the people of Cranleigh who helped by donating items to Mrs Keane in school to fill the boxes".

Andrew Kolmar the International Chairman for the Rotary Club of Cranleigh was delighted with the response from Glebelands students and said "We really appreciate the efforts of students at Glebelands School. This is a record number of gifts collected from the school and we thank the students. The Primary schools of Cranleigh also donated boxes so the estimated total of boxes which will be going to the children of Hunedoara will be well over 500, so well done to everyone who took part”.

BBC Radio Surrey will be following the journey of the shoeboxes in December and will be broadcasting interviews with the children who receive them.
