Glebelands School in Cranleigh had the privilege of hosting an evening with Huw James from the Science Junkies on Thursday 29th September. Huw James has been presenting with the Science Junkies for the past two years, as well as appearing on various science based TV shows.

Huw delivered a talk about the Physics of Extreme Sports to approximately 400 students and, later that evening to 150 members of our local community. He was a fantastic speaker who totally engaged the audience and made the science come alive in a fun and interactive way. The audience learnt about the forces involved in sky diving, how bike wheels stay stable and how rock climbers’ safety equipment works. Huw gave hands on demonstrations as well as video clips of various extreme sports in action.

As Glebelands School is a Specialist Science College we are keen to demonstrate the opportunities available in science; that science doesn’t just happen in the laboratory but can be found in all walks of life all around us. Huw highlighted this brilliantly as he had members of the audience dropping stuffed toy monkeys out of trees and taking surfing lessons on stage. These hands on activities demonstrated the use of science in our everyday lives, hopefully inspiring some students to become the scientists of the future.
