Awards for students

The achievements of Year 11 students who left Cranleigh's Glebelands School in the summer were celebrated at an annual presentation evening.

The evening started with an address by Headteacher Mrs Anne Hutchinson, celebrating the "excellent" examination results in which 74% gained five or more A* to C grades and 99% achieved five or more A* to G grades.

Thanks were then given to the teachers who had supported them throughout their time at Glebelands.

There was a special mention for their Head of Achievement for the five years, Sandra Hearn, who contributed her own special memories of the group with a slide show of their journey through the school.

The students were presented with their certificates by the guest of honour, Angela Bradshaw a local education authority consultant.

Prizes were then awarded for service to the school and community as well as for each subject area. Donations for these came from the school's community sponsors, including Cranleigh Rotary Club, estate agents Roger N Coupe, department store Mann's, Cranleigh Freight Services, Cranleigh Lions, Oakwood Business Consultants, Dataform Chartered Press and Cranleigh Parish Council.

Some 22 students were also presented with additional prizes for gaining eight or more A/A* grades in their GCSEs.

The evening ended with a collection for the school charity for 2010, the Joshua Orphan Care Trust in Malawi, which supports community-driven sustainable development projects to assist vulnerable children and their families.
